Cigar Experts’ Picks: Top Cigar Gifts of 2016

Advisors offer help for the “hard to buy for” with 20+ recommendations

Cigar Advisor, the nation’s premiere online cigar magazine, proudly serves cigar enthusiasts with a uniquely down-to-earth perspective on the enjoyment of premium cigars. The Editorial team has compiled a new holiday buying guide that’s focused on cigar gifts, titled “2016 CA Report: The Advisors’ Christmas Cigar Gifts.” This newly published feature highlights cigar and cigar accessory selections that will please the experienced cigar enthusiast and the casual smoker alike, and on nearly any budget.

“In years past,” says Managing Editor John Pullo, “I really tried to challenge the Advisors — come up with a list of their top picks for great cigar gifts for under $50, or some other really small budget. But it’s Christmas — so this time, we decided money should be no object, and went a little wild with our picks.” Pullo is referring to some of the pricier recommendations in his team’s Christmas cigar gift guide: a $500+ box of Padron Serie 1926 torpedoes, as well as two different Davidoff cigar gift sets that retail for over $12 per cigar. But John is quick to point out that the gift-buying budget to cover a cigar lover doesn’t need to be sky-high: “It really is the thought that counts. And we just wanted to put together a strong list of cigars and cigar toys that any smoker will love, regardless of what you want to spend — and not make you think too hard about what to buy.” Each of the editors also contributed a number of cigar gift picks that still retail for well under $50.

Together, the Cigar Advisor editors picked a wide range of humidors, cigar samplers, cutters and lighters — some are brand new to cigar shop shelves, others are perennial holiday favorites. Among the picks on Executive Editor Gary Korb’s list is the new XIKAR XO cigar cutter: “it’s one of the coolest new inventions from the engineering minds at Xikar,” he writes, calling it “certainly one of the most unique gifts you can give your favorite cigar smoker, or yourself.” One of John’s options is a nine cigar sampler that includes Montecristo, H. Upmann and Romeo y Juileta cigars — “they’re legends,” he says. “I would call these special occasion smokes. Great to enjoy at a special get-together like Christmas, for sure.”

Drew Estate cigars, CAO and Perdomo also made their way into the Cigar Advisor2016 gift guide, as did a number of desktop humidors and cigar lighters. Recommending a 25-cigar humidor named “Ironsides,” Editor Tommy Zman Zarzecki writes it’s not just because he thinks it looks nice; it’s because he owns one as well. “I like to make recommendations for cigars and accessories based off of personal experience…if it’s on my desk or it’s in my humidor, or if it’s something I like to use regularly, then you can bet I’ll recommend it to you.”

Cigar Advisor Releases 2016 CA Report: West Coast Beer and Cigar Pairings

Cigar Advisor published a new article entitled “2016 CA Report: West Coast Beer and Cigar Pairings,” by copywriter Jonathan Detore and beer expert Lauren Lerch. Cigar Advisor is an online cigar magazine that brings a fresh, irreverent, and down-to-earth perspective on all things cigar related to thousands of cigar lovers around the world. In addition to educational cigar content and behind-the-scenes cigar industry articles from some of the business’s top names, Cigar Advisor delivers an array of content about a variety of topics of interest to people who enjoy the cigar lifestyle.

Author Jonathan Detore’s “Cigar Advisor Releases 2016 CA Report: West Coast Beerand Cigar Pairings” is a collaboration piece, soliciting help from Red Rock Brewery’s Lauren Lerch, an avid beer fan and expert. From judging beer tastings to covering a wide array of topics within the micro-brew industry on her website Crafty Beer Girls along with her partner Jenni, Lauren’s experience with west coast beers was an integral part in creating this piece. Throughout the article Jonathan lists some of the best-selling cigars in the industry along with their flavor notes, including such favorites as the Acid Kuba Kuba and Romeo y Julieta 1875. Lauren then gives her interpretation as to which brew made exclusively in the western United States would pair with each cigar.

When asked about the article, Cigar Advisor’s Jonathan Detore said “This was a great way to try and reach the west coast and make them feel included in our community. It’s hard to cover west coast beers in detail considering we call the east coast home. That’s why I think it was really important to get someone from out west to be a part of this, and who better than my longtime friend Lauren? She knows more about beerthan I probably do about cigars, so it was obvious that she would be my go-to person, and luckily she agreed to help. With so many good brews coming out of Colorado, Oregon, and Utah, I’m sure it wasn’t hard for her to pick out some personal winners for her. The trick was really pairing the beers with the cigars and finding those flavor notes that really jive.”

This collaborative piece lists five different cigars with a west coast beer pairing for each. Most brews can be found on a national basis in order to give Cigar Advisor’s audience a chance to sample these recommended beer and cigar pairings for themselves. In addition, Famous Smoke Shop has released a Pairing guide that allows you to pair both liquor and beers with some great cigars — Cheek it out here.

Cigar Advisor magazine is a digital publication created for real cigar enthusiasts who love tobacco and live the lifestyle. Cigar smokers are passionate about almost everything they do — whether it’s the drinks they savor, the food they devour, the cars and motorcycles they dream of, the sports they’re fanatical about or the women they love, Cigar Advisor shares those passions with a razor-sharp edge, soaking up each day and experience as if it were our last. Adorini Leather Cigar Case review

There are many portable accessories we cigar smokers can use to transport and protect our cigars when we are away from home. Adorini’s Leather Cigar Case is a beautiful addition to anyone’s collection for use in more formal and elegant social situations.

The case I was given for review was made from real leather, very soft and smooth to the touch. The stitching along the edges was neat and very attractive.

20160729_195335

Inside, the case is lined with Spanish cedar and had two adjustable dividers. I was able to easily fit up to 5 cigars of varying sizes with no problems. The case is adjustable for just about any length cigar.

The case easily fit in the outer pocket of my suit jackets and it also fit in most of my inner breast pockets albeit a bit snug in some of them.

One of the best features of this case is the ability to see the cigar band once the case is opened. You don’t have to pull each cigar out to see which one it is, the band is easily in view.

20160729_195752The presentation box is well made and suitable for gift giving (bonus points if you gift it full of cigars!). The case sells for $75 retail and the quality is well worth it.

If you are looking to give a cigar accessory gift to a friend or perhaps yourself, you can find this case and other accessories at Adorini’s website: www.adorini.com

D’Crossier announces Presidential Collection, Pennsylvania Avenue

d cigars
Isaias Santana Diaz of Pure Aromas Cigars Inc. is proud to introduce the new Pennsylvania Avenue, a line extension to his D’Crossier Presidential Collection Line Series.
The Presidential Collection began as the Presidential Four Pack in the Diplomacy Series. This new line of cigars are handcrafted in San Jose Costa Rica, using a beautiful Habano Criollo Especial wrapper, a Habano binder with fillers from Brazil and the Dominican Republic. The cigar is medium to full body with a full range of flavors and has been aging in Santana’s Humidor for approximately 19 months.
Santana Diaz’s inspiration for the Pennsylvania Avenue comes from his appreciation of this great country which has been his home since he arrived in 1995.
Santana decided to release this collection at this most auspicious time; while the cigar industry is engaged in a fight for its life against the FDA, who is attempting to regulate it into submission. “Smoking a cigar is about personal freedom, a choice to enjoy something that is familiar, generational and in my case handed down from my father to me. I am hopeful that our industry will be unscathed”, said Santana-Diaz.
The Presidential Collection Pennsylvania Avenue Series will be available in four (4) vitolas, Gordito 4-1/8 x 52, Wide Toro 5-1/8 x 58, Tainos 5-7/8 x 54, and a Robusto 4-7/8 x 50. They will retail from $8.00 to $12.00 respectively.
Available July 24th 2016.

Nomad Cigar Co. to release ‘Martial Law’ at IPCPR

martial law
Nomad Cigar Company is pleased to announce the release of ‘Martial Law’ at this year’s IPCPR show in July.
Martial Law’s blend utilizes all four tobacco regions of Nicaragua; Jalapa, Condega, Esteli, and Ometepe.
Packaged in a 12 count box, with dividers, Martial Law marks Nomad’s 8th Nicaraguan blend and 11th blend overall in its portfolio of offerings.
“The Esteli Lot 8613 has been one of my most popular blends. I love the rustic nature of it but also wanted something with a bit more punch or complexity. Basically the Matial Law blend started as my wanting a double ligero version of the Lot 8613 and kind of grew from there. – Fred Rewey stated.
It is also Nomad’s first project with James and Angela Brown at Fabrica Oveja Negra.
Rewey added, “I was very impressed with Fabrica Oveja Negra during a visit last year. Frankly, I have not seen anyone get a new factory up to speed as fast as they did. With attention to detail and excellent tobacco, a project there was inevitable at some point.”
Details on the Nomad Martial Law include…
Wrapper: Habano
Binder: Jalapa
Filler: Nicaraguan
Factory: Fabrica Oveja Negra
6×50 Toro, 12 Count Box, $12.00 msrp

Drew Diplomat Event Series kicks off with the Liga Privada Unico Serie Velvet Rat and at a Drew Diplomat Retailer near you!

DDsticker-mobile-june-26_1_

Drew Estate announced today the launch of the Drew Diplomat Event Series, an event tour that makes stops across the United States at Drew Diplomat Retailers. The final stop of this tour will take place on August 6, 2016 at the second annual Connecticut Barn Smoker, held on the same Connecticut River Valley farm that produces the wrapper for Drew Estate’s Liga Privada No. 9 and Liga Privada T52 cigars.

The Liga Privada Unico Serie Velvet Rat is presented in a 6 ¼ x 46 Lonsdale vitola, featuring the iconic fan tail featured on many Unico Serie Cigars. The cigar features a Connecticut Broadleaf “High” Mediums Wrapper, with a Plantation Sungrown Brazilian Mata Fina Binder and filler leaves from Nicaragua and Honduras. In total, 5,000 Velvet Rats were produced in January 2015, and have since been at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate aging in the companies cold rooms. The cigar was previously released in October of 2012 at Tesa Cigars, limited to 100 bundles of 10, and at the first annual Connecticut River Valley Barnsmoker last August.

From Jonathan Drew’s Wynwood Safe House, he stated that, “fellowship is at the cornerstone of Drew culture, and now that we are over 5,000 members on DIPS, we wanted to do something extra-ordinary for you guys.  Over the last five years, peeps keep asking about snagging some Velvets. With this momentous Diplomat achievement, we wanted to get ya’ll something bangin.”

Drew Estate fans who are members of the Drew Diplomat Mobile App Program will also be eligible to receive an exclusive Liga Privada Unico Serie Velvet Rat when they make a qualifying promotional purchase at a Drew Estate event in Drew Diplomat Retailers between now and August 6, 2016, while supplies last. The Drew Diplomat mobile application launched on June 3, 2016 and is available on the App Store for iPhone® and iPod Touch® and on Google Play™ for Android™.

Jessi Flores, Director of Subculture Studios, dedicated a commemorative graffiti mural at De la Esquina de los Bancos media cuadra al Oeste in Esteli, Nicaragua, in honor of the first 5,000 Drew Diplomat Members.

Jessi, also known as ‘Victims’, under his street art alias, mentioned that, “This mural is a process that is going to take the summer to complete. We started off with the Diplomat logo and added our unique techniques. We are dropping a Velvet Rat on the wall to compliment the Guardabarranco, the bird that represents our Country. We are proud to see Nicaragua play such a pivotal role in the Diplomat program.”

President of Drew Estate, Michael Cellucci stated. “One of the main goals of creating Drew Diplomat was to connect our Drew Estate final consumers to the Retailers who have stood behind our premium cigars for so many years. Now, with the “Drew Diplomat Rewards Program” we are truly effective from both the on-line and in-store avenues.  It’s a fun and effective approach to show appreciation to the Drew Estate extended family.”
Events that are currently scheduled at Drew Diplomat Retailers between today and August 6, 2016 are listed below. Drew Estate representatives will be present at the events to help answer any questions related to setting up the app on their mobile devices.

Black Label Trading Company announces Bishops Blend

Bishop Catalog Pic

Black Label Trading Company is pleased to announce the release of BISHOPS BLEND: Hand crafted in Esteli at Fabrica Oveja Negra.

BISHOPS BLEND will be debuting at this year’s IPCPR Trade Show.

“The Bishops Blend has been a long time in the making, and I’m very excited for its release. I took a very different approach by using Pennsylvania and Connecticut Broadleaf in the filler. The end result is a very rich and intense flavor profile that highlights the Broadleaf but doesn’t overpower the Nicaraguan tobaccos. The Bishops Blend has a great balance between richness, spice and strength. As with all the BLTC limited releases, it is a unique smoking experience,” says James Brown.

BISHOPS BLEND cigars will be available in limited quantities at select BLTC retailers at the end of July, 2016.
Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Maduro
Binder: Ecuador Habano
Filler: Nicaragua / Pennsylvania/ Connecticut Broadleaf

Black Works Studio announces Green Hornet

GH PR PIC

Black Works Studio (BLK WKS) is pleased to announce the upcoming release of GREEN HORNET: Hand crafted in Esteli at Fabrica Oveja Negra.

GREEN HORNET will be debuting at this year’s IPCPR Tradeshow and will be released in small batches throughout the year.

“It’s never easy following up your biggest hit, but I think the Green Hornet is the perfect addition to the Killer Bee Line. The Green Hornet started as an event only cigar, however after seeing the response from consumers and retailers we knew it had to become a regular release.
The blend is a touch stronger than the Killer Bee to compliment the larger vitola and the closed Candela foot creates a very unique profile from the first puff. The Green Hornet is big, bold, rich and spicy. Everything you expect from a cigar in the Killer Bee lineup,” said James Brown.

GREEN HORNET will be available in limited quantities at select BLK WKS retailers at the end of July, 2016.
Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Ecuador Maduro w/a Candela linear cap & closed foot
Binder: Nicaraguan Habano
Filler: Nicaragua

Casa De Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar opens

prime

Casa De Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar in Brickell-Miami officially opens its doors to the public after an invitation-only “Gold” carpet event attended by VIPs, city officials and local celebrities.  Prime Cigar’s first location in Boca Raton, set them apart as the premier cigar bar in South Florida. Prime Cigar is partnering withTabacalera USA to unveil a one of kind cigar and whisky lounge. The new establishment looks to thrive in the heart of Miami’s business district, at Brickell’s newly built 1100 Millecento residential tower.

Prime Cigar’s founders, Jason Reznik and Ryan Leeds, celebrated in grand style, as they treated over 300 event guests, to an evening of live music, cocktails, catered food, and a variety of select Montecristo cigars. Guests were also treated to a special Johnnie Walker tasting. Hosted by a Master Whiskey expert, the tasting featured a traveling showcase trunk, with every expression of the brand. Casa De Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar finally became a reality after Jason and Ryan along with Javier Estades, Head of Premium Cigar Operations for Tabacalera USA, cut the ceremonial ribbon with oversized scissors. Ryan and Jason were later presented with a “Salute” by Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado. Local celebrities in attendance included Tito Puente Jr., world renowned Cuban- American artist Carlos Navarro, and VH1 reality star and recording artist Jane Castro.

The location of the 4,700 square foot Casa De Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar, was strategically chosen. Brickell has become one of Miami’s most dynamic neighborhoods, where business and nightlife seem to live together seamlessly.  The upscale bar and lounge, will features a walk-in humidor, full-bar stocked with exclusive and hard to find whiskeys, members’ lounge, and private board room. Custom furniture and design elements (which exude simple elegance) will please the cigar aficionados, or those looking for a unique experience, for a rare whiskey, craft cocktails, or a nightcap. The establishment also features a “vintage collector’s room,” which houses unique and vintage cigars.

One important feature that sets Prime Cigar apart is the state-of-the-art air control system. This innovative system provides 80 tons of A/C, and replaces 100 percent of the air constantly. This system was of great importance to Leeds and Reznik, as they wanted customers to enjoy themselves in the upmost comfort.

Prime Cigar was born out of close bond between father and son. Ryan Leeds’ father passed away in a tragic accident, which led Leeds to ponder the meaning of life, with friend and business partner, Jason Reznik.  Ryan retired from his career in banking which spanned two decades, and put his efforts into creating Prime Cigar in Boca.  Inspired by the lessons and experiences of his father, Ryan created a space which celebrates their love of cigars, good whiskey, and luxury comforts.

Casa De Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar invites the Miami-Dade public to experience ‘sophisticated relaxation.’
