- 2 oz. rum
- 1/2 ounces Cointreau
- 1/2 ounces dry vermouth
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Stir with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass.
Garnish with a twist of orange peel.
I was in the mood for rum last night. I had run out of light rum and while taking inventory of the bar shelf in my pantry, I found a bottle of Bacardi 151 way in the back corner.
In juggling terms, the Diabolo is also known as “the devil on two sticks”. It’s a prop that is juggled on a string that is connected to two sticks. Cirque du Soleil has used it in three of their shows.
I figured 151 would be perfect for a drink that reminded me of the word diabolical or devil. The aroma was very nice. I love the smell of the rum. After drinking the cocktail, I got the devil part right, my tongue felt like it was on fire! I think the 151 overpowered the other ingredients at the current measurements. I was able to taste the Cointreau at the finish though.
I’ll have to revisit this recipe once I pick up a bottle of rum that is a little lighter.
** Update **
I tried this drink with Appleton Jamaican rum and triple sec instead of Cointreau. This combination turned the cocktail into something much sweeter. I think if I used Cointreau with the Appleton’s the balance would be almost perfect.
