National Cocktail Day

Cocktails

Happy National Cocktail Day! I’m not sure who invented this holiday but, at least it wasn’t Hallmark. I’d much rather receive a bottle of booze over a card any day.

[su_pullquote] so many cocktails and so little time[/su_pullquote] The earliest know definition of the word cocktail comes from an early American magazine called “The Balance”, from May 1806. It defines it as “Cocktail is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters – it is vulgarly called bittered sling and is supposed to be an excellent electioneering potion”

No one really knows the true story of how the word cocktail came about. There are lots of stories so, choose whichever one you like the best.

Now, what to make for this auspicious occasion? It absolutely needs to be celebratory and fun. There are so many cocktails and so little time.

I decided on one of my favorite Tiki cocktails from the 1940’s; The Hurricane

It’s quite easy to make with only three easy to find ingredients

  • 4 oz. dark Jamaican rum
  • 2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 2 oz. passion fruit syrup

Mix well with crushed ice and pour unstrained into a tall tiki mug or Hurricane glass.  Top off with extra ice as needed and add your favorite garnishes.

Enjoy the day, drink up and be merry! Which cocktail will you be celebrating with?
