Manufactured at General Cigar’s HATSA factory in Danli, Honduras, The Cohiba Royale is a super-premium cigar that has been released this month.
The cigar is available in 3 vitolas: Gran Royale (4.5” x 52) $23.99, Robusto Royale (5.5” x 54) $25.99 and Toro Royale (6” x 50) $28.99.
I was fortunate to receive samples of the Toro Royale from General Cigar for this review.
The Blend
The cigar’s blend is comprised of a Sungrown wrapper leaf from the Jalapa Valley in Nicaragua. The binder leaf is a Piloto Cubano from the Dominican Republic and the filler is a combination of leaves from the Jamastran Valley in Honduras and the Jalapa and Esteli Valleys of Nicaragua.
The Experience
Appearance
The Sungrown wrapper is Colorado to Colorado Maduro in color, has some darker blotches and is very toothy and oily. There are small veins and visible seams. There is an aroma of leather coming from the wrapper leaf. Overall, this is a very nice looking wrapper.
The triple cap is smoothly applied and the finished foot has an earthy, sweet scent.
The cigar was of average weight for its class and firm to the touch.
Pre-light
I used a straight cut on the cap and checked out the draw. The draw was perfect with just the right amount of resistance. I could taste savory, earthy flavors during the cold draw.
1st Third
After toasting and lighting the cigar, it was time to go for a spin. The beginning of this trip started off with a very mild tobacco base flavor with savory notes on my palate. There was a stronger savory flavor coming from the wrapper which I could taste on my lips. The retrohale had a medium strength sensation.
2nd Third
Moving along, the retrohale had a very large increase in strength. The predominant flavor on my palate was strong, rich tobacco. The cigar had a mild finish at this point.
Final Third
Finishing up this cigar had a lot to offer. Along with the strong tobacco flavor coating my palate, I picked up on charred beef with a slightly salty taste at the end. The retrohale was the same as in the 2nd third. The finish on each puff was long and satisfying.
Combustion
The cigar burned very well. It had an even, thin carbon ring with a white ash that was tight and firm. The ash lasted between 1 to 2 inches before I let it drop. The cigar produced a very good amount of smoke from each puff.
[su_box title=”Summary” style=”glass” box_color=”#e1dddd”]The Cohiba Royale Toro was a great smoke. It burned well, had great flavors and was a pleasure to smoke. I would classify this cigar as a medium strength and medium to full-bodied.
Overall, I give the Cohiba Royale a rating of 96.6
[/su_box]
