Cumpay was launched in 1999 from the volcanic highlands of Nicaragua’s Jalapa valley. “Cumpay” is the Tawakha Indian name for a rolled tobacco leaf. This cigar is a Nicaraguan Puro.
Specifics
The cigar is available in six vitolas: Robusto (4 3/4 x 50), Short (4 x 46), Volcan (5 x 60), Corona (5 1/2 x 42), No. 15 (5 1/2 x 54) and Churchill (7 x 48). The Volcan is also available with a Maduro wrapper.
The wrapper is Habano Jalapa leaf. The binder is from Esteli and the filler is from Ometepe.
Maya Selva supplied me with samples of the Corona vitola for this review.
The Experience
Appearance
The main band on the Cumpay has a black background, with a monutain in the foreground. Behind the mountain there are red and yellow stripes. Below the mountain is the name CUMPAY and a gold line below that.
The foot band is a graduated red with Maya Selva Cigars in script.
The Habano wrapper is Colorado Claro in color with noticeable veins and visible seams. It also has a mild tobacco aroma.
The double cap is smoothly applied and the finished foot gives off a barnyard scent.
The cigar is firm to the touch and is average in weight.
Pre-light
I gave the cigar a straight cut and checked out the cold draw. The draw was very good with just the right amount of resistance. I picked up on a savory flavor that was pleasing.
1st Third
The first third of this cigar was very pleasant. The retrohale had a medium – strong sensation and I tasted nutty and woody flavors.
2nd Third
The retrohale picks up and it’s definitely a strong sensation in my nasal passage. The flavors change up a bit with coffee and nuts being predominant.
Final Third
Again, the retrohale is strong. Much like the second third. Once again the flavors change to an earthy tobacco and coffee. The final third had a long, satisfying finish.
Combustion
The Cumpay’s burn was even with a thin, dark carbon ring. The ash was gray in color, very tight and firm and hung on for about a inch or so before dropping.
[su_box title=”Summary” style=”glass” box_color=”#e1dddd”]Maya Selva’s Cumpay is a very enjoyable smoking experience. I classify the blend as medium in strength and medium in body.
Overall, I rate the Cumpay at a 95.[/su_box]
