Oliva Serie G Maduro cigar review

Cigar Review

Along with the Oliva Serie O I had picked up from my local shop, I scooped up a couple of the Oliva Serie G Maduro blend. It had been awhile since I smoked this blend so, I was looking forward to them.

The Serie G line comes in two blends. One is called Natural and has a Cameroon wrapper and the Maduro which has a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. They have similar vitolas with one or two exceptions.

The complete line up for the Maduro series is:

  • 3.75 x 48 Special G
  • 4.5 x 50 Robusto
  • 5 x 52 Belicoso
  • 5.5 x 54 Perfecto
  • 6.5 x 52 Torpedo
  • 7 x 50 Churchill
  • 8 x 52 Presidente

Today’s review is based on the Perfecto vitola.

Specifics

The full blend info for the Serie G Maduro is a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, an Indonesian binder and Nicaraguan filler leaves.

The line is also box pressed which gives this particular Perfecto an interesting silhouette.

The Experience

Appearance

The Maduro wrapper has a nice, oily sheen with minor veins and some visible seams. The aroma from the wrapper leaf is rich and earthy. The cigar was firm to the touch with no soft spots to be found.
The double cap is smooth and nicely applied.

The finished foot has an earthy, sweet tobacco scent.

Pre-light

I sliced the cap with my guillotine cutter and gave a pull on the cigar. The cold draw was a little easier than I prefer but, not terrible. I picked up on hay and cedar flavors coming from the filler blend.

A quick toast and light of the foot and I was on my way.

1st Third

This cigar started off with a mellow, smooth tobacco flavor and hints of cedar. The retrohale had a medium spice sensation and it ended with a short finish.

2nd Third

The middle of this cigar switches things up a bit. I can taste notes of cedar and baker’s chocolate on my palate. I felt there was the same retrohale sensation but, it lingered a bit longer.

Final Third

To keep things interesting, the Serie G changes once more for its final act. Gone is the semi-sweetness of the baker’s chocolate and in its place is a nice spiciness to go along with the cedar flavors. The retrohale remains at a medium level as it transitions to the final third but then moves into strong territory and lingers for quite some time.

Combustion

The performance of this cigar did not disappoint. There was a slight wave in the burn line at first but, it quickly corrected itself. The carbon ring behind the ash was thin.

The ash itself was light gray in color, firm and tight, with an average length before I decided to drop it.

The smoke volume was very good and always satisfying.

[su_box title=”Summary” style=”glass” box_color=”#e1dddd”]This cigar is a very enjoyable smoke with excellent flavors and complexity. I consider it to be medium strength and medium to full in body.

Overall, I give the Oliva Serie G Maduro a rating of 91.7[/su_box]
