La Hermandad Costa Furete

La Hermandad Costa Fuerte cigar review

Cigar Review

First announced in 2013, La Hermandad Costa Fuerte is the second cigar in Primer Mundo’s La Hermandad line. It is also manufactured in collaboration with Abe Flores at the Pinar Del Rio factory in Tamboril, Dominican Republic.

Costa Fuerte translates to “strong coast”. The cigar was named this because the Primer Mundo line seems to be most popular on the East Coast of the US.

Specifics

The cigar’s blend consists of a Bahia Brazilian wrapper which envelops a Dominican Republic binder and a mix of Dominican Republic Corojo 2006 and Nicaragua Criollo 98 filler leaves.

The cigar is available in the following frontmarks / vitolas: Caballito (5×50), Embajador (6×52), Consejero (6×60)

For this review, I received this cigar as part of my January 2020 Stogiebird subscription. It was the Embajador (6×52).

The Experience

Appearance

The Bahia wrapper is Colorado Maduro in color and has a light, oily sheen. There were some minor veins and it had visible seams. The Brazilian leaf had a rich tobacco aroma.

The triple cap was smooth and applied cleanly. The finished foot had a sweet tobacco scent.

The large, glossy white band is simple in design with just the brand logo and name embossed in black ink.

Pre-light

The cigar was firm to the touch and had an average weight compared to other cigars in this class.

The extremely large foot band was easy to remove which was a bonus since I was concerned about ruining the foot with a super glued band.

The cold draw was a little firmer than I prefer but, it did become easier once the cigar was lit. I picked up on savory tobacco notes from the wrapper and filler.

1st Third

Once lit, the predominant flavor is savory tobacco which I felt was coming mostly from the wrapper leaf. There was a slight tingle on my tongue. The retrohale had a medium sensation with a slight “pinch” at the end.

2nd Third

The second third’s retrohale was similar to the first. The flavors I found had strong tobacco notes and at this point my entire mouth was tingling. There was a long finish of rich tobacco.

Final Third

The final third of this cigar was a carbon copy of the second. No differences or changes to speak of.

Combustion

For the most part, the cigar burned evenly and had a thin carbon ring. The ash was gray in color with a firm and tight composition. The ash lasted an average of an inch and a half before I would roll it off the cigar. Each puff produced an excellent amount of satisfying smoke.

I did have a slight issue with the burn when it transitioned between the second and final thirds. It was difficult to keep it burning. I thought it might have been plugged. After rolling it around in my fingers I was able to fix it so I thought. Shortly after that, the burn went all to hell and became a bit frustrating.

[su_box title=”Summary” style=”glass” box_color=”#e1dddd”]The difficulty with the burn took a few points away from an otherwise really good cigar. The Bahia wrapper gives this cigar some of its best flavors which I thoroughly enjoyed. I consider this cigar to be medium in strength and medium to full in body.

Overall, I rate the Primer Mundo La Hermandad Costa Fuerte at a 88.3[/su_box]
