The Sweet Grass Gringo is made by Tabacalera Kafie in Honduras for Stogie Road. I received this cigar I’m reviewing from my monthly Stogiebird subscription.
The cigar is a Toro vitola, 6×52. The blend is comprised of a barber pole wrap using Ecuadorian CT and Nicaraguan Candella. The binder is Honduran and the filler leaves are from Nicaragua and Honduras.
The Experience
Appearance
The cigar is wrapped in cedar which has the words “Sweet Grass Gringo” and a light green ribbon at the foot. Once you remove the cedar, the cigar has a good looking tan and green barber pole wrap. There are a few prominent veins and obvious seams due to the two different leaves. The wrapper has a faint grass aroma.
The triple cap also uses both leaves with the candela leaf at the very top. The finished foot has a spicy, earthy scent.
The cigar had a firm feel prior to the pre-light.
Pre-light
The cold draw is quite firm and has a peppery flavor from the filler and savory notes from the wrapper.
1st Third
The cigar starts off with a mild retrohale and a slight spice, slightly grassy flavor on my palate with no finish.
2nd Third
Moving along, the retrohale at this point might even be a bit milder than the first. Although, the main flavors are an increased peppery spice with a mild tobacco and a medium finish.
Final Third
This last part of the cigar starts to get a little interesting, not always a good thing. There was a slight increase in the spice sensation during the retrohale. The main flavor turned to strong tobacco and a spicy, longer finish.
The not so good thing was that the cigar got very mushy. So much so, that when I used my cigar dagger, it just swung around the pick, making it hard to finish the end.
Combustion
The cigar had issues burning evenly for almost the entire session. The candela wrapper burned much slower than the CT leaf. I needed to perform many touch-ups. At the final third, the candela just straight up canoed.
[su_box title=”Summary” style=”soft” box_color=”#e1dddd”]This particular cigar had a lot of burn and construction issues. It wasn’t the best experience I’ve had with a cigar. I consider this cigar to be mild to medium in both strength and body.
Overall, I rate the Stogie Road Sweet Grass Gringo a 73.3 [/su_box]
