The 151 Swizzle is an original drink created by Don The Beachcomber sometime in the 1940’s.
Ingredients
- 1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz. sugar syrup
- 1 1/2 oz 151 proof demerara rum
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- 6 drops (1/8 tsp) absinthe (or pernod)
- 8 oz. crushed ice
Steps
Put everything into a blender. Blend at a high speed for 5 seconds. Pour into a metal swizzle cup or a collins glass. I used a pilsner glass which works well also.
Add more crushed ice to fill if necessary. Dust with nutmeg. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and whatever else strikes your fancy.
Tasting notes
The 151 Swizzle is a savory, cool and refreshing cocktail. There is a slight sweetness on the finish and hints of nutmeg as it starts to gravitate towards the bottom of the glass. There is an interesting tinge of brown from the bitters that give the drink a unique look.
This drink is a good example of how to increase your bar one drink at a time. I needed the demerara rum for the Zombie cocktails I have made the past few weeks. Now that I have that particular rum, I have created more options for drinks that I can make at home.
By adding one (or two) bottles of something you don’t have at home when you try a new recipe, you can create an impressive home bar in no time!
As is the case with most of my tiki recipes, you can find this one in Jeff Berry’s Beachbum Berry’s Grog Log.
