Today I’ll be reviewing the MBombay Classic Torpedo, a cigar that first came out in January 2018. I received this cigar as part of my monthly Stogiebird subscription.
Specifics
The torpedo’s dimensions are 6 1/8 inch long by a 52 ring gauge. The blend is comprised of an Ecuador Habano wrapper, an Ecuador binder and a mixture of Dominican, Nicaraguan and Peruvian filler tobacco.
Appearance
[su_pullquote]There was a lot going on in the first third of the cigar.[/su_pullquote]The Classic’s cigar band is large, beautiful and very ornate. In fact, if my kids were younger, I’d use this band as an oriental area rug in their dollhouse. Underneath the rug is a smaller band with the brand name and line of the cigar.
The Habano wrapper is tan in color, has a few minor veins and slightly visible seams. The wrapper smells like mild tobacco. The cap is a smoothly applied triple cap and the foot is unfinished with a strong tobacco aroma. The cigar is firm to the touch with no detectable soft spots.
The Experience
Pre-light
I gave the torpedo cap a straight cut and tried a pre-light draw. It was slightly firm but, not bad considering the foot is unfinished and semi-blocked. I picked up some mild tobacco notes from the draw and a savory flavor from the wrapper.
Time to light this cigar and see how it performs.
Combustion
The burn on this cigar was incredible. It was so sharp and even, it was beyond razor sharp. It was laser sharp! The carbon ring was very thin and got a little bit thicker later on. The tight, firm ash was gray in color with black striations.
1st Third
There was a lot going on in the first third of the cigar. The retrohale had a mild to medium spice sensation. There were spicy notes on the tip of my tongue and savory tobacco flavor on my palate. The smoke was slightly astringent and I had tingly sensations around the perimeter of my tongue.
2nd Third
The second third’s retrohale was definitely into the medium range. There was a long finish on my palate while it was coated with rich tobacco. The smoke was no longer astringent. In fact, my mouth began to water from the rich, savory tobacco.
Final Third
Finishing up the cigar, I was met with an increased strength in the retrohale but it never became overpowering. The end brought forth a deep, intense tobacco flavor and the tingling on my lips and tongue returned.
[su_box title=”Summary” style=”glass” box_color=”#e1dddd”]The MBombay Classic is an extraordinary cigar. Each puff produces a tremendous amount of satisfying smoke. This medium strength, full bodied cigar is quite a joy and it was certainly Cigar Dagger worthy as I smoked it to the nub.
For all of these excellent characteristics, I rate the MBombay Classic a 97. [/su_box]
