Romeo y Julieta 1875 Nicaraguan – cigar review

Cigar Review

The Romeo y Julieta 1875 Nicaraguan is a puro that was released late last year. As the name implies, the cigar is constructed with wrapper, binder and filler leaves from Nicaragua. The cigar is manufactured by Plasencia Cigars S.A. for Altadis.

The cigars I sampled were of the Toro vitola, a 6 x 52 with a finished foot and a smooth triple cap. The wrapper was a medium tan color, and gave off a sweet tobacco aroma. The foot had a typical “barnyard” aroma that I commonly find with Nicaraguan tobaccos.

After clipping the cap with a guillotine cutter, I gave the cigar a pre-light draw and discovered a savory flavor from the wrapper leaf. The draw was good and I picked up some savory tobacco notes at the time.

I lit the cigar with a triple flame torch and gave it a few puffs. The cigar produced a good amount of smoke. The burn for this first third was even with a thin carbon ring. The ash was firm and gray in color. There was a mild spice sensation in the retrohale. I found the finish to also be mild. I tasted basic tobacco flavor with a slight tingle on my tongue.

The second third started to pick up in strength and favor. The retrohale was a bit stronger as well. There was a richer tobacco flavor along with a slight bitterness on the finish. The burn remained even.

The final third was consistent with the second third. That’s not a bad thing as the cigar is very enjoyable and satisfying.

Overall, the RyJ 1875 Nicaraguan is an excellent smoke in the medium strength and body category. I liked this cigar and I give it 97 out of 100.
