I didn’t have a Sanchez & Haya post as part of my original series. After researching my previous articles a bit more and verifying facts, I felt this company needed its own story.

The Y Pendas & Alvarez Cigar Company was founded in 1867 by Ysidro Pendas, Miguel Alvarez and Faustino Lozano. In addition to Ybor City, Y Pendas & Alvarez had factories in New York City and Cuba.

The brick factory was built sometime before 1910. Originally, the El Grifo factory which was owned by the P. San Martin Cigar Company was on this same plot of land. The M. Bustillo (Morgan) building has a very rich history. It has been the home of six cigar companies and has been named a landmark of West Tampa.

The factory building was constructed by F. Lozano, Son & Company. They occupied the factory from 1905 to 1923. In 1924, Morgan Cigar Company bought the rights to the F. Lozano cigar brands. Brand: F. Founded in 1882 by Alvaro Garcia and Jose Vega. Their company manufactured premium, hand rolled cigars. Currently, the brand is a US machine made cigar manufactured by Scandinavian Tobacco Group . The majority of these machine made cigars use a Dominican candela wrapper.
