Daiquiri

National Daiquiri Day

Cocktails

It’s a day late due to a crazy weekend but, I could not forget to pay homage to the Daiquiri, a great, classic drink!

The Daiquiri was created by Jennings Stockton Cox near the iron mines of Daiquiri in Cuba somewhere around the late 1890’s early 1900’s.

It gained some popularity early on when Naval officers from the USS Minnesota was in Cuba and Cox served them the cocktail. From there the recipe spread to a few military base bars.

It’s real popularity would not come until prohibition and people flocked to Cuba for entertainment and libations. From there the recipe became a staple of cocktail books everywhere.

The Daiquiri was also Ernest Hemingway’s “go-to” cocktail while he was in Cuba.

The classic recipe calls for light or white rum, I prefer gold.

Ingredients:

2 ounces gold rum
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1/2 ounce sugar syrup

Add all the ingredients into a shaker with ice, and shake until well-chilled.
Strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.

Garnish with a lime in whatever shape you desire.
