Lovely Lovely

Lovely Lovely Tiki Tuesday

Cocktails

The Lovely Lovely cocktail was created in 1964 by “Danny” at the Papeete Bar in the Waikikian Hotel’s Tahitian Lanai restaurant on Waikiki Beach. The restaurant and bar closed down in 1996.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz. 151-proof puerto rican rum
  • 2 TBSP brown sugar
  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz. orange curacao
  • 10 oz. crushed ice

Steps

Dissolve the brown sugar into the lime juice and then add all of the ingredients into a blender. Blend at high speed. Pour into a large snifter or tiki mug.

Tasting Notes

When this cocktail is fresh out of the blender, there is a very bright citrus taste with a brown sugar finish. I really did not pick up on the rum at all. I believe it was because the cocktail was in a frozen state.

As I let the drink thaw out a little in the snifter, I felt there was a better representation of the drink’s flavors as everything started to settle in. This drink is sweet and tart with some rum notes rounding everything out.

My wife, who is not a fan of lime juice in cocktails gave this a rating of “not terrible”. I considered that high praise indeed.

I always double any cocktail recipe I make at home. Mostly because I choose larger glassware and single batches just look sad in a large glass. My snifter glass could not fit a double batch so, I had enough for a refill. I was curious how the higher (highest?) proof rum would be in this cocktail. I found out after about one and a half glasses.

If this cocktail were served in a restaurant, I could see where they would put a two drink limit on this. I’ve always felt that was more of a marketing gimmick but, this cocktail would certainly warrant it. “One Fifty Fun” as my friends and I used to call it, really can pack a punch.

I enjoyed this cocktail and I’m adding it to my arsenal of tiki drinks for the home bar. If you make this drink yourself, I’d love to know your thoughts. Let me know in the comments!
